You certainly will want to see Monte Alban. Situated on a mountain top with a magnificent panoramic view of the valleys below, Monte Albán once served as a holy center for 40,000 of our Zapotec ancestors. The grandeur and the genius of our ancient culture can be seen hare in one of the most important archeological sites in México. Interesting and well preserved, this majestic and harmonious Meso-American site is not to be missed while visiting us in Oaxaca.
Another outstanding visit is to the Monastery of Cuilapan, the Village Market and Archeological Site of Zaachila, as well as the wood carving village of Arrazola.
Cuilapam is a village famous for its magnificent Dominican monastery with open-air chapel, built in 1550. An architectural and historical wonder in a setting of breathtaking mountainous beauty, it brings together the dominant architectural styles of 16th century Europe brought over to Mèxico. Stop in the town of Zaachila, the last of our Zapotec capitals, to visit the fascinating market to see the art of bartering as well as the unearthed tombs in the now famous families of wood carvers who create extraordinary creatures, both realistic and fanciful, would complete this unique trio of pre-Hispanic, colonial and contemporary visits.
We also invite you to visit the villages of Ocotlan, San Bártolo Coyotepec and San Martín Tilcajete.
A visit to the village of Ocotlan, distinguished by its rambling outdoor market and beautifully restored 16th century church is a wonderful insight into village life. San Bártolo Coyotepec is nearby and famous for its tradition of making black pottery in the technique handed down by our ancestors. Afterwards you might consider a drive to San Martín Tilcajete where word carvers create extraordinary wood carvings.
Time spent visiting Teotitlán del Valle and Tlacochahuaya will be well rewarded.
A visit to the 16th century church of San Jerónimo in the village of Tlacochahuaya with its joyous interior frescoes painted by our Indian ancestors, its antique organ designed in the 17th century will leave you in awe. And then on to Teotitlán del Valle to visit the homes and studios of weavers who make magic with natural dyed wool in ancient Zapotec and Mixtec designs. Their creativity and skill will amaze and please you.
After seeing Monte Alban, you might want to explore further to see the archeological site of Mitla, a Zapotec holy site, ceremonial center, and the residence of holy men, with its breathtakingly beautiful mosaics. Situated next to the Cathedral of Mitla which is constructed partly from the stones of this ancient religious center. An extraordinary juxtaposition of the old and new worlds of México. On the way, if you like, stop in the town of Santa María El tule to see one of the earth’s oldest and largest trees- a Cyprus measuring over 12 stories high and said to be over 2,000 years old. On Sundays, you might visit the budtling. Colorful Indian market of Tlacolula that spreads for blocks around the town’s 16th century Baroque chapel and stop for a taste of mezcal at a Palenque (plantation) that produces this uniquely smoky Oaxaca drink made from cactus.
